Activities of the Aerological Observations Division

Upper-air Observation Using Radiosondes
Weather phenomena such as sunshine, rain, snow and wind near the surface of the earth (which directly affect our daily lives) are closely related to the large-scale movement of the upper atmosphere. This division carries out aerological observation of the upper atmosphere at internationally specified times everyday and immediately transmits the observation data to the Japan Meteorological Agency to be used for weather forecasting.
Type Element Time
Radiosonde Atmospheric pressure, Air temperature, Humidity, Wind direction/speed 0900, 2100 JST* Balloon launched 30 minutes before observation time.
Ozonesonde Ozone amount, Atmospheric pressure, Air temperature, Wind direction/speed 1500 JST* Wednesday
In the event of severe weather conditions such as typhoons, radiosondes are also released at 0300 JST* or 1500 JST*.
